Kandice and her boyfriend, Rodney Lavon Kirk, 23, were visiting family members when she was fatally shot.

Kirk initially told police that the gun discharged accidentally, but further investigation showed inconsistencies between his statement and the gathered evidence.

Kirk was charged with second-degree murder.
