After dating for six months, Ashley and Eric Serdechny, 20, broke up. He went to her house to discuss the break up, and shot her on the doorstep before turning the gun on himself.

Serdechny's mother would let her son use the gun for target practice, and he had gun-related quotations on his Facebook page.
