Jason was shot multiple times by his ex-girlfriend, Susan May.

Joy and May were both homeless and staying with a friend at the time of the shooting.

May alleged that Joy had been physically and sexually abusive with her and that he had made threats to kill her and her daughters.

May was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 65 years in prison.
