Michelle had recently retired after a 30 year career as a dispatcher for Salt Lake City Fire Department

On November 21, 2009 Gary Robert Howard, 43, shot and killed Michelle inside her brand new home that she had worked so hard to purchase. It was located in a gated community of West Jordan, Utah.

He then called a friend and threatened to take his own life. After about four hours of negotiations with West Jordan Police, Howard turned a 12-gauge shotgun on himself ending the stand-off.

According to family and friends, Michelle and Howard had an “on-again, off-again” relationship and police had previously been to her home to investigate domestic violence before the murder-suicide.

Michelle had recently retired after a 30 year career as a dispatcher for Salt Lake City Fire Department.

Howard did odd jobs and preferred to be paid in alcohol instead of money.
