Mary was stabbed in the head by her husband, Ernest Wireman, who then set fire to her mobile home.

Wireman then went to the home of Mary's adult son, Jeremy Risner, and attempted to shoot him.

Wireman was found guilty of murder, attempted murder and arson, and was sentenced to 110 years in prison.
