Pa was shot to death by her estranged husband, Dang Xiong, 24, who then killed himself. The homicide occurred in front of his home as Pa Hou Vang got out of her car.

In 2008, Dang Xiong had physically assaulted Pa and was charged with domestic abuse disorderly conduct. He pled guilty to an amended charge of disorderly conduct, without the domestic abuse modifier, and was sentenced to time served in jail.
