On December 17, 2009, police received reports from several individuals who had received a disturbing text message from Justin Zachariah Matern, 34, around 7:00 p.m. stating that he had carried out a threat of killing his estranged wife, Melissa and two sons, Gabriel and Raiden and that he was next. At 8:45 p.m. police discovered the bodies of the family of four. Matern shot and killed Melissa and their two sons and then turned the handgun on himself taking his own life.

Matern had left a suicide note at his place of employment stating his intentions to harm his family. The note was not discovered until after the murder suicide occurred.

According to friends and co-workers, Matern appeared distraught over the recent marital break-up and had expressed thoughts of suicide.
