Tony Padilla, 22

UT, Ogden

February 17, 2009

On Tuesday, February 17, 2009, police arrived in Ogden, and found Tony stabbed to death. The apartment belonged to Katherine and Kurt Wangler. Katherine, 27, had recently filed for a protective order against her husband Kurt Wangler, 38, who had been serving a sixty day sentence in jail at Ogden’s Kiesel facility for a February 9, 2009, domestic violence incident that left Katherine severely injured.

On the morning of February 17, Wangler had been released on a work permit. Instead of looking for a job, he violated the protective order by going and went to his wife’s apartment, forcing his way in. He was angry because he had found Tony in the apartment as a visitor. Eight hours after police found Tony stabbed to death; they were able to track down Wangler and his wife, Katherine in Salt Lake City through a phone-tracking device. He had apparently abducted her after the incident.

According to charging documents in the Second District Court, Wangler confessed to killing Tony Padilla. He pled guilty to First Degree Murder and aggravated burglary and was sentenced sixteen years to life.
