Kyle was shot by William Andru Ball, 21, the estranged husband of a woman that Kyle was dating. There were eleven or more people present in the home where the homicide occurred, including William Ball’s two-year-old child and other children. He also shot and injured his estranged wife.

Investigators found eleven shell casings at the scene. William Ball committed suicide by asphyxiation while being held in the Chippewa County Jail pending sentencing. A jury had convicted him of first-degree intentional homicide and first-degree recklessly endangering safety.
