Mae was stabbed by her boyfriend, William J. Bowden, 60. Mae Helm had called police reporting that William Bowden had a knife and would not leave the home. When police arrived on the scene they found her in the rear hallway of her apartment. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

William Bowden pled guilty to one count of homicide by negligent handling of a dangerous weapon and one count of aggravated battery. He was sentenced to consecutive terms of three years in prison and three years of extended supervision on each count.
