Valarie was stabbed to death by her daughter’s ex-boyfriend Jesus G. Garcia, 19 of Springfield. Garcia also stabbed Girouard’s boyfriend, Kurt Haarmann several times. Haarmann survived the attack.

According to family members, Valarie’s sixteen-year-old daughter had broken up with Garcia a month earlier. The week before the murder, the teenage girl awoke to find a gloved hand over her mouth and knife to her throat; when confronted by Valarie, Garcia removed the mask and fled.

According to police records, Garcia admitted the prior incident to police.

He has been charged with murder, rape, armed assault, home invasion, assault with attempt to murder, and assault in a dwelling while armed.
